Theater Architecture and Performance Spaces in Istanbul

Aycan Kızılkaya is an architect and architectural scholar. Her studies mainly focus on theater architecture, theater interiors and performance spaces through the adaptation of existing buildings, practices of adaptive reuse in contemporary theaters, site-specific theaters and temporary spaces for performing arts. While currently in Germany, she is engaged in researching alternative theatrical spaces in the context of adaptive reuse. As part of the DFG-funded research project "Architecture and Spaces for Performative Arts" at the HTWK Leipzig under the direction of Prof. Dr. Annette Menting, Aycan Kızılkaya will give a lecture on her research topic and experiences with interior spaces and scenography.
About:
Aycan Kızılkaya received her B.Sc. in Architecture from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Architecture in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013, and studied International Master of Interior Architectural Design Program (IMIAD) at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). In 2018, she started her PhD in "Interior Architecture" at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Institute of Science and Technology. She has worked as a research and teaching assistant in ITU Graduate School, IMIAD program, and has contributed to various national and international symposia and workshops. She was a visiting scholar at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), Institute of Interior Design and Scenography in Basel, Switzerland, with the Swiss Government Research Excellence Scholarship 2021-2022. Currently, she is spending a scholarship year 2022-2023 in Germany at TUM, sponsored by TUBITAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
