Plasma lamp electric supply improvement
A power supply of 6kV pulsed in a 10MHz bandwidth has recently been developed in our Institute to module a plasma lamp’s magnetron which performances are very promising. Of modern conception, this electrical supply can deliver continuously 1.4 kW to the magnetron while simultaneously providing additional pulsed power of 1.4 kW. This electrical supply will enable us to enter a new experimentation phase on plasma’s acoustic resonance in the bulb. It offers possibilities to maintain the electric current’s debit above a selected and modifiable threshold. The pulse tension can also be adjusted, as well as the pulse frequency and duty cycle. Pulses are controlled in order to synchronize them with the plasma’s vibration. However, this is a first prototype with room for improvement. The intern’s role is concieve and create a new version of this electrical supply, sturdier and with improved performance.

IT development for an exposition on biology with interactive displays
The goal of this project is to develop interactive and pedagogical displays for an exposition on nature and biology, using elements such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino.
In collaboration with the designers and biologists from Pro Natura Center Champ Pittet (www.pronatura-champ-pittet.ch/home-en), the candidate will be in charge of developing the interactive displays which explain concepts in nature and biology for children. An example of such a display is a “Dance Flower” with sensors on the floor to allow children to answer questions through body movements. Other technologies to be used are e.g., Kinect cameras, touch screens, computer graphics, etc. to create playful visualizations.
Required skills:
- Software development on Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or other small modules
- Familiarity with data acquisition from sensors or cameras, data processing and visualization of content
- Testing of complete interactive displays
- Ideally, basic knowledge in electronics
- Basic knowledge of French is required (B1), good language skills are a plus.
